Research Data Alliance (RDA)
Vision
Researchers around the world sharing and using research data without barriers.
Purpose
The purpose of the Research Data Alliance is to accelerate international data-driven innovation and discovery by facilitating research data sharing and exchange, use and re-use, standards harmonization, and discoverability. This will be achieved through the development and adoption of infrastructure, policy, practice, standards, and other deliverables.
Working Groups
The bulk of Research Data Alliance activity will take place through Working Groups. An updated guideline for Working Groups and how they might develop Case Statements is now available. This should be seen as a work in progress. We want people to work through these guidelines and to provide constructive feedback on their feasibility. Please feel free to email enquiries@rd-alliance.org with the subject “WG Guideline Feedback”.
We have now started to make contact with groups who have registered their interest in Research Data Alliance Working Groups. The text of the email is now available.
We have also set up forum infrastructure to facilitate the operations of Working Groups and registration for this system is now open.
Genesis
The Research Data Alliance emerged from simultaneous activity at both the governmental funding level and at the grassroots level. The DataWeb Forum, commenced in 2011, defines the role of international funding agencies in a body like RDA; its genesis and original vision, purpose and governance are described in a Draft Concept Document. Grassroots efforts include the Data Access Interoperability Task Force (DAITF) which also commenced in 2011, with one meeting at Lyon in September 2011 and another prior to the International Conference on Research Infrastructures (ICRI 2012) meeting in Copenhagen in March 2012. The Data Consortium strove for interoperability and common vision across the large DataNet/INTEROP projects in the US.
