Big Data : The Advance of Data-Driven Discovery

Du 16 au 18 octobre 2013 – Ottawa, Canada

Publié le 23 juillet 2013 par Thérèse Hameau

Activities that aim to leverage knowledge discoveries and innovations with the goal of promoting general societal goods are a crucial element of complex, international research environments. While the particular knowledge and products generated through research is important for achieving this goal, such a diverse environment necessarily relies upon various kinds of infrastructure (scientific but also administrative) to enable the creative endeavors of researchers and innovators. Reconnect13 focuses on this dimension of research: the role of research administration practices and information sharing in supporting knowledge discoveries and innovations. Session topics and presentations will primarily be concerned with the ways in which incorporating recent developments in research data management can lead to a better and more connected research and innovation ecosystem.

We invite you to explore the conference’s three session streams below, which will feature panel discussions, workshops, and presentations from leading practitioners and researchers in a range of vocations and fields of study.

Optional Half-Day Workshops

ICSTI Half-Day Workshop – Wednesday, October 16th

`Data and Non-Data Integration – A Journey Across Disciplines`
The International Council for Scientific and Technical Information (ICSTI) will hold a half-day workshop for the morning of Wednesday, October 16, 2013, as part of the 2nd Annual CASRAI International Conference. The workshop theme is `Data and Non-Data Integration – A Journey Across Disciplines.`

Thanks to the creativity and innovation of scientists, libraries, publishers, and information and technology communities, scientific discovery is being accelerated through the seamless integration and synthesis of digital data and non-data (e.g., text, multimedia, visualization). Rapidly making sense of huge volumes of data and facilitating easy navigation between data and non-data are enablers of new knowledge – and discovery. In this workshop, we will explore how this integration is taking place across a broad range of disciplines, such as environmental sciences, life sciences, chemistry, engineering, geosciences, and crystallography.

International Records Management Trust Half-Day Workshop – Wednesday, October 16th

ACCESSING AND PRESERVING CREDIBLE DATA
Digital information integrity involves issues with major implications for accountability and transparency, and research initiatives.

Data, and the records from which they are derived, are essential to understanding socio‐political, economic and cultural trends; supporting economic development; and facilitating service‐delivery. They play a key role in accountability, transparency and integrity in governance, and should provide a foundation for openness and the democratic process. Research and government accountability rely upon access to credible, reliable, and accurate data and records.

DataCite Half-Day Workshop – Friday, October 18th

Program Overview

Activities that aim to leverage knowledge discoveries and innovations with the goal of promoting general societal goods are a crucial element of complex, international research environments. While the particular knowledge and products generated through research is important for achieving this goal, such a diverse environment necessarily relies upon various kinds of infrastructure (scientific but also administrative) to enable the creative endeavors of researchers and innovators. Session topics and presentations will primarily be concerned with the ways in which incorporating recent developments in research data management can lead to a better and more connected research and innovation ecosystem.

The conference will be organized into three session tracks featuring panel sessions, presentations, and workshops. “Reconnect Big Data: The Advance of Data-Driven Discovery” constitutes the main thematic track. It is featured simultaneously alongside two additional session tracks: “Reconnect the Machine” and “Reconnect the Library.” More detailed summaries of each series of sessions are offered below.
